It’s been a great start of the year for Tomas Berdych, as he is standing #4 in the RACE this year, with a 18-4 record with some really solid tennis, which makes us think he can finally assault Top-5 this year and why not try to win his maiden GS.
He started the season a bit slowly though, with a poor loss to Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut on Chennai QF’s 75 in the 3rd, but since then he’s started to gather confidence, and right now is really tough to beat. His AO campaign was solid, ot losing a set till he met Djokovic on the QF’s, where he was one of the three players which took a set off Djokovic ( others were Wawrinka and Murray). Then, February proved to be a great month for Tomas, as he won oth of his DC rubbers vs Switzerland [ including one great win vs #17 Wawrinka in 4 tough sets], and reached Marseille final playing inspired tennis ( he had the match won vs Tsongal being ahead a set and a break but he choked). This match didn’t hold him back, as he made Dubai 500 finals beating notably #2 Federer saving MP. He played great vs Djokovic, but it’s clear that he has a matchup issue with the Serb and lost 57 36. This week, in Indian Wells he’s keeping things simple, as he’s defeated Zverev, F.Mayer, #10 Gasquet, and inform Anderson, all of them in straight sets to reach the SF’s, where he faces comeback man Nadal, who’s always proved as a tough obstacle for Berdych ( the Czech hasn’t beated Rafa since 2006). In my opinion, this match will show us if Tomas has the mental ability to overcame his demons and be a solid contender for #5 or even further. He has room for improvement in the second half of the season, and with Ferrer & Federer slowly declining he definitely has a chance. Good luck Tomas!
