Marin Cilic: Knocking on Top-10 door.

– The 1,98m. croat has earned himself a chance of re-entering Top-10 after beating Klizan 75 64 60 to reach USO QF [ his first Slam QF since AO 10′] . It will be a tough task, as he faces #4 Andy Murray, who looked in blistering form destroying big server Raonic 64 64 62, but despite that and the fact that Murray has a 6/1 H2H vs Marin, the only win Marin has over Andy was in Flushing Meadows, in 2009 R4.

of this is a result of some consistent results and hardwork since 2011 summer. Before that he had peaked at #9 in February of 2010 after winning Chennai and Zagreb and reaching A.Open SF’s ( beated Roddick and Del Potro, lost in 4 to Murray). But everything went down since then, and Marin stayed just 9 weeks on Top-10, and due to an awful end of 2010 and beggining of 2011 he went down to #32, but since Hamburg 2011 things went better for Marin, who won St.Petersburg, reached the finals in Umag and Beijing, and also made Hamburg QF’s and Toronto R3. Thanks to that results and wins over Raonic, Youzhny, Tipsarevic, Ljubicic and Del Potro he ended the 2011 season in the Top-20. But his comeback to Top-10 was stopped by an injury which made him skip the Australian Open and the beggining of the season. His 2012 season started badly, as he didn’t won his 1st ATP match till Miami R2 [ defeated Kunitsyn]. But his confidence grew by winning a great match vs Nalbandian on Davis Cup despite Croatia lost the tie. He kept winning matches to reach Munich F [ beated Youzhny and Haas], Madrid R3 [ beated #10 Isner by 7/6 7/6] and RG R3 in the clay swing. He then won Queens ATP 250, winning by default the final vs Nalbandian when he was down 6/7(3) *4/3 and made Wimbledon R4. He then played a really strong tournament in Umag, beating #19 Dolgopolov and #24 Granollers. He followed his great recovery by making Hamburg SF’s, Toronto R3 and Cincinatti QF. Marin has recovered the confidence and consistency on his groundstrokes, after a shaky time in which he was an unforced error machine, and that makes him very toug to beat for players below him, but this season he just has beated one top-10 win, vs Isner. It would be really good for him and his confidence to beat Murray, good luck Marin!
