– Nobody expected Tomic to do well on clay, after some disappointing results on US soil. Altough he doesn’t have any spectacular result, he has beaten some players we weren’t expecting him to defeat.
He started in Monte-Carlo, beating an inform Istomin before taking a set off Dolgopolov. Then, he went to Barcelona, beating a former Top-20 player like Gulbis, but losing in 3 sets to spanish dirtballer Montañes. He reached his first ATP QF on clay in Munich, beating Rochus and Italian claycourter Starace, before losing to Lopez. On Madrid, on a very fast clay, he expectedly lost to Stepanek. In Rome we have seen the best of Bernard on clay, beating a very competitive player like Giraldo, ranked #51, and with a game suited to clay, also by coming back after losing 1st set. Then, against Djokovic he displayed some amazing tennis, despite losing 3-6 3-6.
Let’s hope he keeps improving in Nice and RG, where he will be seeded for the 1st time in a major!. He has done pretty well to improve his ranking during clay, instead of getting worse as expected, and the best part of the season for him is yet to come ( Grass and US hardcourts)
